Taxi Rates Change

Fares have not changed in 18 years

Recently, taxi fares increased in Raleigh for the first time in 18 years. The City sets the base fare and mileage rates for the cab companies that operate in Raleigh.

As of May 1, the cost will be:

  • The fee to start a ride will increase to $3 (from $1.95)
  • The per-mile rate will increase to $3 (from $2.50)
  • The per-minute wait time fee will increase to 30 cents (from 25 cents)

In 2023, the Taxi Inspector's Office of the Raleigh Police Department reviewed Raleigh's taxi fee structure. Taxi rates from across the state and country were benchmarked. Along with an extensive examination of other cities' rates, taxi owners and drivers gave feedback during informational meetings.

The changes won't affect rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft.
