Great news! Raleigh is taking considerable steps in climate action: The community has reduced greenhouse gas emissions below 2007 levels despite significant population growth. The timeframe of 2007 - 2022 saw a 21-percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per person.
Sustainability shared this information as part of its Community Climate Action Plan implementation update at the City Council’s work session on Tuesday.
Meeting Climate Action Goals
Raleigh’s Community Climate Action Plan aims to:
- Reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050
- Address equity, environmental justice and community health
- Build community resilience to the impacts of climate change
Raleigh’s Community Climate Action Plan strategies focus on high-impact climate action in the categories of:
- Transportation and land use
- Buildings and energy
- Resilience and cross cutting
“The successes we are seeing are the result of the collaboration of several City departments and community partnerships,” says Megan Anderson, Sustainability Director. “We are proud of everyone in the community for taking action to slow climate change, address equity and community health, and to continue to build our community resilience to climate impacts in Raleigh.”
