Raleigh Arts Commission Percent for Public Art

PUBLIC ART: PERCENT FOR PUBLIC ART PROGRAM

In 2009, as a result of the passage of a city ordinance setting aside one half of one percent of municipal construction funds for public art, the Arts Commission began developing a new Public Art program and exciting new art. The key mission of the program is: "To create and integrate diverse artworks into Raleigh's landscape in order to establish a vibrant visual environment that provides public places with civic distinction, as well as fostering meaningful connections between people and place."

As a result of the passage of the ordinance, the Public Art and Design Board (PADB) - with members appointed by the Raleigh Arts Commission chair - was established to oversee the creation of Percent for Public Art-generated projects. The first site selected for integration of public art is the upcoming Buffaloe Road Aquatic Center. A national call for artists (RFQ) resulted in the selection of Vega Metals, Inc. (artists Neal Carlton and Francis Vega). Additional sites will be selected over the coming months.

The City of Raleigh is poised to realize its promise as a 21st Century "City of Innovation." The cultural arts in general, and public art in particular, are fundamental to this success. By integrating art into the architectural, landscape and infrastructure design of capital projects, by encouraging excellence in the design of public buildings, parks and streetscapes, and by creating a landscape that is distinctive and memorable, Raleigh will continue to establish itself as an important American city.
