History and Background

The Capital Area Greenway Master Plan, which was first adopted by City Council in 1976, includes over 270 miles of stream corridors identified for protection and the development of greenway trails. A greenway trail has been constructed along the Mine Creek corridor north from Crabtree Creek around Shelley Lake and further north along the East Fork of Mine Creek to Long Street. The Honeycutt Creek Greenway project continues this trail along Mine Creek to West Millbrook Middle School/Park and Honeycutt Park north of I-540. The trail will then continue and connect to Falls Lake at Raven Ridge Road. This terminus will also connect to the South Shore Trail on Falls Lake. The total length of this trail segment is approximately 5.67miles and it includes 26 stream crossings and 18 road crossings.

On March 20, 2007, Raleigh City Council approved a design services contract with Chas. H. Sells, Inc. for the preparation of design development plans for the Mine Creek - Honeycutt Creek Corridor.

Project Scope

Citizen Advisory Council (CAC) District: North

The scope of this project is to design and build a 5.67-mile segment of greenway trail, connecting the existing Mine Creek Greenway Corridor to the South Shore Trail on Falls Lake.

Goals and Objectives

  2. Provide areas for storm water storage and management
  3. Protect riparian buffers to protect water quality
  4. Provide a multi-purpose network of paths connecting all areas of the city
  5. Completing a critical link in the greenway system between Shelley Lake and Falls Lake.
