Nature Programs

Nature programs are held at Durant Nature Park, Walnut Creek Wetland Center, and at other various parks, greenways, and community centers around the city. They are diverse and may include nature topics such as reptiles, plants, night hikes, and birding. Nature Camps are held in the summer for children ages 9-12. Group Nature Programs
Raleigh Parks & Recreation Nature Programs offer a variety of group programs at several parks around the city. These programs are great for school groups, scout groups, preschools, family events, home school groups, and other organizations. The programs are arranged at the time and location the group requests. Two topics can be taught simultaneously. For current program topics look at the Group Nature Program Brochure.

Reservations must be made at least three weeks before the requested date and can be made as early as August 1st for the current school year. Early planning and scheduling are advised if you would like a program in the spring. A confirmation packet will be mailed six weeks in advance. Payment is due two weeks before the scheduled program date. For more information, call Nature Programs at (919) 831-6856.

Science Afield:
These programs offer hands-on outdoor experiences in City Parks on nature topics that tie into NC science curriculum. Activities take advantage of the natural environments found in our parks. These programs are offered for K-5th graders. Each program lasts one hour and accommodates one class of 30 students or less. Programs January 1-June 30: $50. Programs July 1-December 31: $45.

Schoolyard Science:
These programs are designed to give classes the flexibility to take part in a Nature Program without leaving their school grounds. Schoolyard Science programs teach science concepts that tie into NC science curriculum through hands-on activities. Programs last one hour and accommodate one class of 30 students or less. Programs cost $50 plus a fee for travel reimbursement.

Preschool Programs:
These programs are geared to the abilities of 4-5 year olds. Participants learn about nature through a story and hands on activities. Programs last 45 minutes and can be held indoors or outdoors at your preschool's facility. Group size is limited to 15 children accompanied by 4 or more adults. Programs cost $45 plus a fee for travel reimbursement.

Birthday Parties:
Does your child love science and nature? What would be a better gift than one of our exciting programs at his or her birthday party? Programs can be held at your party location or at one of Raleigh's parks. Several parks offer indoor and outdoor facilities for rental. Most of our program Science Afield and Schoolyard Science programs can be adapted for a birthday party setting.
