Special Olympics Wake County provides year-round sports training and athletic competition 18 sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities, at no cost to the athlete. Special Olympics offers athletes continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
Special Olympics Wake County needs large numbers of volunteers to help make our local competitions a success. Volunteers fill positions such as awards presenter, concessions, event officials, & athlete escorts. In addition, dedicated individuals are needed to coach athletes for regional & state level competitions.
School-Based Training
School-based training is offered to students in self-contained special
education classrooms in schools throughout the Wake County Public School System. Teachers may elect for their students to train and compete in the following sports:
Independent Athlete Training
Whether still in public school, or not, athletes may choose to train as an Independent Athlete in the following sports:
