Planning Phase

The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the City of Raleigh, the Town of Cary, Wake County, the North Carolina State Wolfline and other Wake County municipalities are working together to prepare a long-term Capital Area Bus Transit Development Plan and a CAT Three-Year Bus Services Plan.

The CAT Three-Year Bus Services Plan consists of specific recommendations for the first three years (2012-2015) of the long-term CAT Bus Development Plan, which has plans for bus services through 2040. The CAT Three Year Bus Services Plan focuses on improving current service and provides detailed recommendations for new, expanded and/or improved bus services to be implemented over the next three years.

The 2040 CAT Bus Development Plan provides a long-range capital investment and bus operating service plan to implement improvements for new and/or expanded commuter bus, as well as local and in-fill bus services through 2040.The CAT 2040 Bus Development Plan will also complement the regional rail service plan currently being evaluated by Triangle Transit. Bus services will provide high frequency transit on non-rail corridors, as well as connections to all rail stations permitting residents from all areas to easily access the regional rail system.

The purpose of the 2040 and Three Year Bus Plans is to identify ways to increase mobility in the Capital Area in the short and long term. The plan will be based on input Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, the City of Raleigh, the Town of Cary, Wake County, the North Carolina State Wolfline and other Wake County municipalities, agencies, businesses, community leaders, residents and other interested parties. The 2040 CAT Bus Transit Development Plan looks at the transit needs for all of Wake County and will integrate with regional transit routes. The CAT Three Year Bus Services Plan evaluates enhancements and expansions to CAT bus services.

Both of these plans address how an improved bus transit system can accommodate and serve the anticipated growth in the Capital Area. Furthermore, they are intended to help identify areas of deficiency and allow for a more streamlined and cost effective system that is easy and safe to use.
