Upcoming Classes

Glass: Glass Fusion
Class starts Tuesday mornings February 12th & 14th, from 9am - 12pm with instructor Jean Cheely. Get ready for a fun class of discovering techniques for fusing glass in a kiln. In this introduction to fusing glass, you will learn the fundamentals and principles of preparing glass for firing in a kiln while creating tiles, plates and bowls for decorative or functional use. No previous experience with glass is necessary. All tools will be provided: students purchase glass from Pullen Arts Center. Painting: Encaustic with Anna Podris
Class begins Wednesday evenings February 6th - March 13th from 7-9:30pm with instructor Anna Podris. Come paint with wax! Explore encaustic painting, an ancient medium, in this beginner level class. Learn to scrape, incise, stencil, and paint to create imagery. Also try out using wax as part of a mixed media piece. Some painting or drawing experience necessary. Photography: The Fine Art of Fine Art Photography
Class starts Wednesday evenings February 20th - March 27th from 7-9pm with instructor Barbara Blaisdell. This will be a six week course covering the aesthetics and techniques of digital photography. We will discuss the differences between a snapshot and a fine art image and how you get from one to the other. We will cover such topics as pre-visualization, following the light, composition, camera settings & equipment, work flow and post processing. Anyone with a digital camera will be able to utilize this course instruction to help them become a better photographer. Bring your digital camera and camera manual to class. Art4Fun: Artful Teacher Workday
Join us on Monday, February 18th from 8am-6pm. School is out, so art is in! Participants can spend their teacher workdays working on a variety of art projects, including painting, drawing, weaving, and clay, with times for traditional recreational activities and games mixed in. Projects and instructors vary from day to day so register for one session or for all available sessions. Participants should bring lunch and two snacks. Art4Fun: Mask Making
Come out Saturday February 9th and 16th, from 10:30am-2:30pm with instructor Mary Shipp Starke. Learn about masks from different cultures as you make your own colorful ceramic mask. We will compare our own personal celebrations to those practiced in different cultures. You will learn how to add features and texture to your clay mask using basic techniques. Once the mask has been fired in the kiln, students will paint their mask. Program is for ages 8-12 years old. Nuno-Felt Collage: Yardage, Patches & Pieces
This workshop will be held on February 23rd and 24th from 9am - 4pm with instructor Liz Speer. We'll make color and texture samples, leading up to a sheet of nuno-felt, thin and pliable enough for garments, or whatever end use you've been thinking of exploring. Liz will bring lots of samples and ideas, as well as illustrious stories. She has made nuno-felt collage style yardage, to be cut and pieced into various styles of garments, in combination with her hand-woven fabrics, as well as exhibition quality coats. Bring your favorite fleece and silk pieces, in colors you like to work with and come prepared to rock-n-roll. Some experience preferred, and pre-workshop communication encouraged. Printmaking: Monotype
This weekend workshop held February 23rd and 24th from 10am - 4pm with instructor Anna Podris. Create painterly, one-of-a-kind works of art using Pullen Arts' professional press! Achieve the effects of monoprinting that are not possible in any other medium. This class will take an experimental approach in covering the beginning techniques of additive and subtractive monoprinting. An Afternoon of Painting & Critique Sessions
Join us Thursday afternoons, February 28th - April 4th, from 1:30-4pm with instructor Leslie Pruneau. This is a course for any painter or drawer with experience in their medium who wants to further their techniques or maybe just needs a push out of their comfort zone. There will be recommended exercises in class, as well as on an individual level, to broaden the individuals expectations within their own styles. Also, a slide show and critique of master works will be given to emphasize the different genres and styles of painting in history and how those works have shaped our styles today. To keep the dialogue open, a group critique will occur later in the course. This class is for the advanced artist and working outside of class is recommended, but not required. Students should bring their own supplies and be prepared to work on the first 'challenge' on the first day of the course.
