Purpose

The Appearance Commission was established by City Council in 1973 to provide guidance, advice and recommendations regarding the visual quality and aesthetic characteristics of the City of Raleigh. The commission consists of 15 members, the majority of whom have special training or experience in architecture, landscape architecture, horticulture, city planning, or related design fields.

Appearance Commission business meetings are held the foruth Thursday of every month, immediately following the Development Review Committee meeting in Room 809 at One Exchange Plaza.

The principal work of the commission is carried out under the direction of two standing committees:

Committees

Development Review Committee

The Development Review Committee reviews site plans of major development projects and coordinates commission review of rezoning applications which have site plan components, issuing design recommendations based on the city's appearance and environmental statutes. It also develops procedural recommendations for the encouragement of good design practices.

The committee meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month. All meetings begin at 4:30 p.m., in Room 809 of the One Exchange Plaza building.

Strategic / Outreach Committee

The Strategic / Outreach Committee is responsible for communicating the activities and recommendations of the commission to the public, and for encouraging community interest and involvement in city appearance matters. Among the committee's major efforts is the annual Sir Walter Raleigh Awards program, recognizing outstanding achievement in local design and appearance.

The committee is also engaged in the collection and study of data, legislation, and procedures that pertain to community appearance and the visual environment, and preparing recommendations and proposals to the City Council concerning them. In addition, the committee serves as a coordinating body with other boards and agencies toward the general betterment of the visual aspects of the City.

Strategic / Outreach Committee meetings are held the first Thursday of every month, immediately following the Development Review Committee meeting in Room 809 at One Exchange Plaza.
