2030 Comprehensive Plan

The North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association Awards Committee Presented Raleigh Two Awards During the North Carolina Annual Planning Conference Award Luncheon on October 6, 2011 in Charlotte, N.C.

The 2030 Comprehensive Plan was selected to receive the 2011 North Carolina Marvin Collins Planning Award in Outstanding Planning - Comprehensive Planning (Large Community) category. The award recognizes plans of high merit adopted within the past two years. The Awards Committee also selected the City of Raleigh/NC State University/Hillsborough Street Partnership Implementation of the Reconstruction and Revitalization of Hillsborough Street project to receive the same award for the Implementation (Large Community) category that recognizes highly effective and/or successful projects implemented in the past five years.

The awards were presented during the North Carolina Annual Planning Conference Awards Luncheon on Thursday, October 6, 2011, at the Hilton Charlotte Center City, located at 222 East Third Street in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Key contributing factors in the nomination of the 2030 Comprehensive Plan integrated an innovative approach with best practices for plan making including contemporary elements such as a vision statement, environmental protection, regional planning and coordination, art and culture, a future land use map, and an Implementation and Action Plan. The Hillsborough Street Renaissance Project innovations included a citizen-initiated charrette process, one-hundred percent City investment in design and construction, improved pedestrian safety with a reduction of size of a major thoroughfare, adoption of historic districts in the area, and the implementation of roundabouts for safer intersections.
