The mission of the tennis program is to provide tennis opportunities for all ages and ability levels. Lessons, leagues, ladders, and quadrants are some of the programs offered year-round. There are 20 tennis locations and 104 tennis courts available around the city. The main tennis facility is Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center with 23 courts, two backboards, two ball machines, and more.

Adult Leagues

Impact Team Tennis (Summer League)

Impact Team Tennis features coed teams competing in six sets—men's and women's doubles, men's and women's singles, and mixed doubles. The unique ITT format, which is also played in the Professional League, includes no-ad scoring, substitution, and coaching.

Players have an opportunity to qualify for ITT National Qualifiers and the national championship.

City teams (teams playing home matches on Raleigh Parks and Recreation courts): $75 team fee. Matches on City courts will be charged per match and billed separately.

Adult Instruction

Adult Level 1

Ages: 18 years and up.

No experience is needed! Forehand and backhand groundstrokes, volleys, overhead, serve, scorekeeping, and the rules. To graduate to level 2, players must be able to serve from the baseline, keep score, and play a full-court set.



Adult Level 2

Ages: 18 years and up. 

Must be able to serve 6 out of 10 in from the baseline, keep score, and have played a full-court set or have an NTRP 2.0 or 2.5 rating. To pass, players must be at the 2.5 level.



Adult 2.5 Drills

Ages: 18 years and up. 

Must be at the NTRP 2.5 level or use full swing on most strokes during match play to enter this class. This is a drills class using all of your strokes. This class will focus more on 2.5 match skills than stroke technique. To pass, players must be at the 3.0 level.



Adult 3.0 Drills

Ages: 18 years and up. 

Must be at the NTRP 3.0 level or have full-swing strokes during match play to enter this class. This drills class may include topspin, underspin, and slice serving. To advance, players must be at the 3.5 level or be able to hit topspin and underspin and slice serves.



Adult 3.5 Drills

Ages: 18 years and up. 

Must be at the NTRP 3.5 level or able to hit topspin and underspin on groundstrokes, underspin volleys, and slice serves. This is a drills class that will work on all strokes. To graduate, you must be at the 4.0 level.

Junior Instruction

Tennis Junior Tiny Tots

Ages: 4 to 6 years

Eye-hand coordination games + fine motor skills are the focus of this fun intro class.

Tennis Junior Level 1

Ages: 6 to 18 years

No experience is needed for this class. Players will work on building rallying skills and learn basic strokes, scorekeeping, and the rules of tennis. To graduate to level 2, players must be able to sustain a rally, make 6 out of 10 serves from the baseline, keep score, and play a full-court set. Please bring light, loose-fitting clothes, non-marking sneakers, and a racquet. Racquets will be available to borrow if needed.

Tennis Jr Level 2

Ages: 8 to 18 years

Must be able to have a sustained rally, serve six out of ten in from the baseline, keep score, and have played a full-court set. This class works on using full-swing forehand, backhand, full-swing serve, overhead, and good volley techniques while playing points. To pass, players must successfully demonstrate these techniques while playing a match.

Tennis Junior Level 3

Ages: 10 to 18 years

Must use full swing on all strokes during match play to enter this class. This class focuses on topspin and underspin for all strokes and the slice on the serve. To advance to level 4, players must be able to hit topspin and underspin on both groundstrokes, underspin on both volleys, and slice on the serve.

Tennis Ladder

Singles/Doubles Ladder (18+ Recreational Singles & Doubles)

Ages: 18 years and up

Recreational singles/doubles ladder play for all levels. Participants play challenge matches for points. Players may join the ladder anytime. Ladder rankings will be updated online each Monday. Players arrange their own match time and location.

Quads

Round Robin Quadrants (Recreational Doubles)

Ages: 18 years and up

Location: Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center

All matches are at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center. Each week there will be courts of doubles matches. A player will play a total of 24 games in a round-robin format—eight games with each of the 3other players as a partner. The results will be used to adjust positions for the following week. The player with the most games won will move up, and the player with the fewest will move down a quad. All players are responsible for being present or having a substitute present. New balls will be provided each week.

Seniors (55+)

Adult Drop-In Play

Ages: 55 years and up

Location: Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center

Organized drop-in doubles play for all levels.  The organizer will assign you a partner and a court.  There will be multiple short rounds of play.  Fee:  $10

Junior Team Tennis

USTA Junior Team Tennis (JTT)

JTT consists of a practice and match each week. Players compete in singles and doubles matches against other area coed teams. A tournament is held at the end of each season.

Tryouts are held prior to each season at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center. Minimum requirements include rallying 6 in a row, serving 6 out of 10 balls in on each side, ability to keep score and play matches. Players will be placed on teams based on their level and age as of the cut-off date. For specific dates and information, call Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center.

Ages: 7 to 10 years

Practices are held at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center on Fridays from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and matches are on Saturdays at 9 a.m.

Ages: 11 to 18 years

Practices are held at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center on Fridays, TBD, 4:30-6 p.m., and matches are Saturdays during the spring and fall season. During the summer season, matches are weekday mornings at 9:30 a.m.

Adults participating in adult cardio on tennis courts

Adult Cardio—All Levels

Ages: 18 years and up 

Cardio Tennis is a fun group activity featuring drills to give players of all abilities a high-energy workout. Taught by a education professional, Cardio Tennis includes warm-up, cardio workout, and cool-down phases. If you are looking for a great new way to get in shape and to burn calories, try Cardio Tennis!

Private and Semi-Private Lessons and Clinics

Private lessons, semi-private lessons, and clinics are available for juniors and adults by certified tennis instructors. Lessons are by appointment and are scheduled by calling Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center at 919-996-4129.

Private lesson rates (resident/non-resident) (prices are per person, per lesson):

  • 1 person private: $48/$63
  • 2 persons: $26/$33.50
  • 3 persons: $20/$25
  • 4 persons or more: $15/$18.75
  • 4 persons or more for 6 weeks: $72/$87

Ball Machine Rental 

Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center offers ball machine rentals to allow players the opportunity to practice strokes and techniques. Each ball machine is customizable to feed balls at a pace customized to your level. Ball machines are rented by calling Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center at 919-996-4129.

Rental Prices (includes court fee):

  • $12.00 per hour of use
  • $6.00 per half hour of use

Ball Machine Club (Includes court fee, subject to a limited number of blackout dates):

Individual rates:

  • $125.00 (use one hour per week)
  • $225.00 (use one hour per day)

Family rate: $350 (Immediate family) one hour/day
