In the fall and winter, owls are actively calling to claim their territory. We’ll set out at dusk to listen for these calls plus learn why these creatures of the night are so well adapted to living in darkness. Animals leave lots of clues behind and one of them is their scat! If we know what to look for, we can tell a lot about animal behaviors like what they eat, where they roam, and what kind of animal they are just by looking at their scat! Winter nights are often crisp, clear and full of stars. Join us at the farmhouse for a fun evening of constellation cookie decorating, star stories and a starry craft. Join members of the Raleigh Astronomy Club and Wilkerson Nature Preserve for a special star gaze in conjunction with the N.C. Science Festival. Event is free of charge! Club members will share their telescopes and knowledge of the night sky. Please park in the overflow parking lot and walk to the field near the park office. You may wish to bring a flashlight (with a red light if possible) to aid you in walking. Adults must accompany their children. What kinds of toads live in our area and how can we identify them? Find out the answers to these questions and lots more as we search for toads in the preserve. Come join us for this tree-mendous program where you’ll get to learn all about trees. We will learn what makes trees so unique, how we use them in our everyday lives, and even how to identify some of our common trees that can be found in your backyard! Adults must accompany children. Many animals are active around sunset or shortly after. Take a walk with a park naturalist to explore the woods and fields at this special time. Look for deer, coyotes and owls. This program is designed Recycling Relay Rumble Age: 5yrs and up. Gather your recyclables and head on over to Durant for some recycling fun! You’ll work in teams to complete relay challenges and engineering feats like bridge building and egg drops using recyclables. You can use recycling brought from home or some that we’ve gathered. Hot chocolate will be provided. Advance registration is required. Children must be accompanied by adults. Adults and children must register and pay the program fee. Durant Nature Preserve – Course Fee: $4 #215884 Jan 27 Sa 2:00-4:00pm Serve the Earth Day Age: 10yrs and up. Celebrate Earth Day by practicing a little TLC on this most special planet! (It’s the only livable one we have!) We will work on removing Chinese privet, porcelain berry and other invasives that choke out the native plants of the wetlands around Walnut Creek, and we’ll pick up any litter we encounter. Come dressed to get a little messy and bring a water bottle. We will provide gloves and tools, as well as refreshments. If you have additional clippers or your own gloves, you are welcome to bring them. No electric or power tools, please. All volunteers will have to sign a waiver, and parents must sign a waiver for all children under age 18. This is a great way to get in those service hours!
