Council Member Thompson is a lifelong resident of Raleigh and whose family has a long history in Raleigh dating back over 100 years.

After being educated in the Wake County Public School system, Dickie attended NC State University where he received a BS degree in civil engineering. While at State, he served as president of Theta Chi Fraternity.

Professionally, he has worked for over 38 years in his family's general contracting company, J.M. Thompson Co. which constructs commercial building projects in Raleigh and throughout the state of North Carolina.

Although new to the City Council, he certainly isn't new to community involvement. Dickie is currently the chairman of the Raleigh Durham Airport Authority and is the past chairman of the Raleigh Planning Commission. He is the council's liaison to the Raleigh Little Theatre, Raleigh Convention Center & Performing Arts Complex Commission, and the Parks Recreation and Greenway Advisory Board.

He has formerly served on the Raleigh YMCA Board of Directors, Hayes Barton United Methodist Church Board of Trustees, and the Board of the Raleigh Rescue Mission. Dickie has spent many enjoyable years coaching youth teams in Raleigh Little league baseball, CASL soccer, and YMCA & Salvation Army basketball leagues.

He has a special passion for mission outreach with his church and has gone on many Appalachian Service Project (ASP} trips with high school students. He has also made multiple mission trips to Central America and Haiti to aid with the earthquake relief effort.

His hobbies include cycling, golf, hiking, yard work, and time with family and friends at Emerald Isle.

Dickie and his wife, Angie, have been married for 37 years and were blessed with a daughter, Lauren, and son Travis (wife Elizabeth).
