Waste Reduction and Recycling as a Sustainable City

Last Modified: September 30, 2010
Sustainable Raleigh Recycling

The City of Raleigh has worked diligently to develop unique and timely solutions to the solid waste issues facing all local governments.

Raleigh Recycling promotes waste prevention and reduction before recycling. The American culture produces large amounts of waste every day. We each should do our part to make the world a more sustainable place.

Since the City began its targeted recycling programs in 1989, more than 742,609 tons of recyclables have been diverted from local landfills.

As always, Raleigh Recycling has served as an example to other municipalities across the state through its waste reduction and recycling programs, its rain barrel and composting programs, and its programs for household hazardous waste and environmentally friendly cleaners.

Additional resources to aid in waste reduction are also available through the Environmental Protection Agency.
