Appearance Commission

Last updated Feb. 02, 2016 - 9:18 am

The Appearance Commission meeting scheduled for February 4, 2016 has been canceled.

Design Standards Review - Outdoor Seating

The Appearance Commission has been tasked by City Council to review design-related elements of the recently adopted Citywide Outdoor Seating Ordinance. These elements include the use and appearance of stanchions, outdoor furnishings, and signage, as well as any impacts these elements may present to the occupancy load requirements.

The Citywide Outdoor Seating Ordinance was first approved by City Council on August 4, 2015, and subsequently city staff was directed to enforce, monitor, and evaluate the effectiveness of the new ordinance with a report back to Council at the end of a three-month pilot period. At the November 3rd Council meeting, staff reported the findings of the 3 month pilot period evaluation and recommended text amendments to the ordinance to lend greater clarity to address documented enforcement issues. At the meeting, Council directed specific action items to be evaluated by the Appearance Commission, all of which had visual and aesthetic impacts to the urban environment. The items of specific concerns recommended for Appearance Commission review and recommendations include:

  • Design, Style, and Material of Stanchions
  • Design Standards for Outdoor Furnishings
  • Signage

In response the Appearance Commission has formed a committee to review and make recommendations on the above elements.

The review committee meetings have been scheduled for Wednesdays in January and February 2016 from 3 to 5 p.m. in Room 303 of the Raleigh Municipal Building, 222 West Hargett Street. The public is invited to attend.
