Filling a Vacancy on a Board or Commission

There is no application process if a citizen wants to fill a vacancy on a City Of Raleigh board, commission or committee. The following FAQ details the procedure is which these vacancies are filled.

What are the City's Boards and Commissions?

There are a variety of boards, commissions and committees comprised on citizens. These are unpaid volunteer positions with terms, term limits and other rules. See the list of boards, commissions and committees and participation guidelines.

How do I Know if there is a Vacancy?

If the Councilor Decides to Nominate Me, What Happens Next?

When nominations are called for at the regular City Council meeting, the councilor will present your name to the City Council for voting. The City Council will vote on the nomination by secret ballot, although the results will be made public. If the candidate receives five votes from the City Council, the candidate is approved to serve on that board or committee.

How Long Can I Serve on a Board/Committee?

An appointee may serve on any one board/committee no more than three consecutive two-year terms (six years total). Also, no person shall serve on more than two boards/commissions at any one time.
