Current Activity

Tree clearing finished on Aug. 10 to prepare for the utility relocation portion of this project. Finalized design plans have been completed by design consultant, Dewberry Engineers, Inc. and necessary permits have been received. Project construction is expected to start in Winter 2018.

Summary

The 51-year-old bridge on Lake Dam Road, which is located over Walnut Creek just below the Lake Johnson dam, was recommended for closure following a routine inspection. Wear to two beams in one portion of the bridge showed signs of failure to the structure. This project is fully funded through the City of Raleigh's Office of Transportation Planning.

History

Although the existing bridge over Walnut Creek, which was built in 1966, has been closed for nearly two years, it is not in danger of collapsing. However, failure of the beams could produce a large hole in the middle of the pavement if not replaced. This project addresses failure of the bridge structure with a new design. The bridge will re-open after construction is complete.
