The Adventure Program offers classes, clinics, trips and camps throughout the city, the triangle area and state. See what we can do for you. You can register for any adventure program online using RecLink, in person at any staffed facility, or by calling the Adventure office at 919-996-6855.

Pool Sessions

Pool Sessions are open practice times for all levels of paddlers, whether you're working on play boating, perfecting your roll or just wanting to try out the sport.

Location: Optimist Pool

Dates: Dec - 8, 15, 22, 29; Jan - 5, 12, 19, 26; Feb - 2, 9, 16, 23; March - 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; April - 6, 13

Time: 5-8 p.m.

Private Roll Instruction

Private roll instruction

For the boater wanting to take the next step in the kayaking progression, we are proud to offer personalized roll instruction. While everyone becomes proficient with these skills at different times, it takes about four separate, hour-long lessons on average to develop a fledgling pool roll.

Kayak Basics

This introductory-level course is for those wishing to learn more about the sport of kayaking. The four-hour course provides a comfortable and pleasant environment in which to learn the basics of paddling.

Location: Optimist Pool

Dates: Jan. 13, Feb. 10, and March 3

Time: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Spring Bike Week

Spring Bike Week

Need something for your middle-schooler to do this spring break? The Adventure Program's Spring Bike Week is a fun way to see all the trails and greenways our city has to offer. We will be on the go all day, riding from park to park and learning about biking, bike maintenance and the opportunities to ride in Raleigh. An overnight camping experience will take place Thursday night.

Location: Forest Ridge Park

Dates: April 2 through April 6

Time: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Neuse River Kid's Club

Neuse River Kids Club

This is a multi-session kayaking program for youth. Sessions will start on flat water and move to more advanced moving water as the group builds skill.

Location: Neuse River

Dates: Fridays, April 20 through May 11

Time: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Neuse River Canoe Trip

Neuse River Canoe Trip

Spend a day canoeing the Neuse River with guidance from the Adventure Program staff. We will meet you at the take-out point and shuttle you to the put-in for our trip. 

Location: Neuse River 

Dates: April 21 

Time: 1-5 p.m.

History

In 1984, the Adventure Program was born out of the city's Nature Program. Over the years the goal has always been to provide instructional opportunities in a wide range of outdoor adventure activities as well as:

  • Provide enjoyable adventure experiences that embrace experiential learning;
  • Create an atmosphere where group experiences foster a sense of team;
  • Provide instructional foundations in a wide range of adventure activities;
  • Focus on safety issues and manage risks in the most proactive manner; and,
  • Provide an opportunity for environmental appreciation and stewardship.
