Kaplan Drive Park Bridge Replacement
- Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources (Lead)
A public meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, November 7th, from 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm, and will be held in the Waterfront Conference Room at Lake Johnson Park, 4601 Avent Ferry Road, Raleigh.
The Kaplan Drive Park Bridge Replacement Project consists of the follow tasks, each being implemented in a chronological order:
- Task 1: Site Assessment and Field Survey
- Task 2: Development of Bridge Replacement Plans
- Task 3: Develop Trail Realignment Designs
- Task 4: Public Meeting (Open House Format)
- Task 5: Construction Bid Services
As of September 12, 2017, Task 1 has been complete and Stantec is working on completing Tasks 2 and 3.
Since its inception, the Kaplan Drive Park walking and fitness trail has been served by a timber pedestrian bridge. In 2013, a falling tree substantially damaged the bridge. Subsequently the bridge superstructure was removed and the portion of trail in this area has remained closed since. The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department (City), intends to replace this bridge, connecting sections of the park’s trail that were severed during the original bridge’s removal.
A separate bridge continues to serve the park and greenway trail approximately 40 ft. from Kaplan Drive. The City has determined this bridge has reached the end of its service life and will be replaced by re-aligning the trail to access Kaplan Drive approximately 50 ft. North of Simmons Branch. The new trail alignment will mean that the existing bridge can be demolished and a new connection including ADA compliant trail accesses from Kaplan Drive can be established.

The City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP) includes funding for design and construction of a replacement bridge to fill in the gap left in the Kaplan Drive Park Trail created when the previous bridge was damaged and removed. This funding also covers the design and construction associated with the removal of a second bridge in Kaplan Drive Park and the creation of a new trail alignment to accommodate its removal.
