Examples of Acceptable Recycling Items

Below is information on the acceptable items in the Raleigh Recycling program. The photos provide you with a visual illustration.

Recyclable Bin

Newspapers and All Inserts

Newspapers and inserts

  • Remove from plastic bags or sleeves. Recycle bags and sleeves at your grocery store.

White and Colored Paper

  • Discard any bold or neon colored paper.
  • Paper clips should be removed from paper but staples are okay.
  • No checkbooks, books, carbon paper, paper with adhesive backing, napkins, tissues or other paper products.
  • Open junk mail. Remove any promotional stickers or product samples and discard.
  • Place shredded paper inside a brown paper bag (NO PLASTIC BAGS); staple closed and mark "shredded paper" on the bag.

Telephone Books

  • Remove from plastic bags or sleeves. Recycle bags and sleeves at your grocery store.

Magazines and Catalogs

  • Remove from plastic bags or sleeves. Recycle bags and sleeves at your grocery store.

Paperboard, Chipboard, SBS Board, Tubes

  • Remove liners and flatten.
  • No boxes with wax coatings where you can scratch wax off with a finger nail. Examples include some frozen food products.

Corrugated Cardboard

  • Remove all packing materials, including any foam liners.
  • Completely break down boxes and flatten, do not just step on them.
  • Reduce cardboard to pieces no larger than 3' x 3' in size. 4. No food residue. NO pizza boxes! If cardboard is not reduced to 3' x 3' it will not fit in the troughs on recycling trucks and can not be collected for recycling.

Spiral Paper Cans

  • Recycle the whole cans, metal ends do not have to be removed.
Recyclable Carton

Acceptable Plastic Items #1-#5 and #7

Plastic Items Resin Coded #1-#5 and #7

  • Exceptions include: NO clam shells, deli or frozen food trays, plastic cups, #7 PLA cups or containers, lids, pumps, plastic bags/film.
  • No bottle that previously contained a hazardous material, such as a pesticide, pool chemical, automotive fluid, or anything with the poison symbol on it, can be accepted.
  • Rinse items lightly.

Other Acceptable Containers

Gable Top Cartons

  • Remove lid and discard.
  • Rinse and flatten.

Aseptic Boxes

  • Remove straw and flatten.

Aluminum Cans and Other Metal Food Containers

  • Rinse.

Aluminum Foil and Food Trays

  • Remove all food residue. Since foil is so thin it will actually be destroyed before any food residue is in the melting process. If you are not willing to clean the foil first, please discard it.

Plastic Beverage Rings

Soft beverage rings are only acceptable; not the rigid type.
