City Issues Call for Entries for Sir Walter Raleigh Awards; Deadline is June 20
The City of Raleigh is accepting nominations for the 2014 Sir Walter Raleigh Awards for Community Appearance. The annual awards recognize outstanding new construction, building renovation, and natural resource conservation in the Capital City.
Coordinated by the City of Raleigh Appearance Commission, the awards program was established in 1983 to celebrate exemplary achievements in enhancing the city’s appearance. The City has presented more than 200 Sir Walter Raleigh Awards to developers, designers, building owners, community and civic groups, churches and citizens.
This year’s Sir Walter Raleigh Awards feature new submittal categories to highlight innovative projects and designers, and celebrate the positive impact design has on our community. The categories include residential, commercial, historic preservation/rehabilitation, public facilities and spaces, landscape design, and public service.
Also new this year, the Sir Walter Raleigh Awards will be presented immediately preceding and in support of the inaugural Hopscotch Design Festival in Raleigh. The festival will be a forum for distinguished national talent and notable local contributors to share ideas and foster conversation about how design is shaping the future. It will feature more than 25 sessions from presenters who work across the disciplines of graphic design, user experience design, urban planning, technology, architecture, music, food, film and more.
Individuals nominated for a Sir Walter Raleigh Award must either be residents of Raleigh or maintain an established location in the city. Programs or projects nominated for an award must be located in the city or its planning jurisdiction. All projects must have been substantially complete within the last five years prior to being nominated. Projects currently under construction are not yet eligible for an award.
Award winners are selected based on specific criteria, including exhibition of a new standard of excellence, awareness of land stewardship, community involvement and innovation, integration of sustainable building principles, conservation of natural and/ or historic resources, and meeting or exceeding applicable ordinances. Awards may not be issued in every category.
Nominations for Sir Walter Raleigh Awards will be accepted through June 20 at 5 p.m. Anyone can submit nominations through a quick and easy process.
The Sir Walter Raleigh Awards ceremony will be held Tuesday, Sept. 2, at CAM Raleigh prior to the kickoff of the Hopscotch Design Festival.
