The New Halifax Community Center Has Reopened
The new Halifax Community Center reopened on Wednesday, June 25 with a dedication ceremony at 5:30 p.m.
The Halifax Park Community Center, located at 1023 Halifax Street, was built in 1972. The Raleigh Housing Authority is the property owner and provided financial assistance for the construction of the original building to ensure community facilities were available for recreation and other activities for the area residents and other City of Raleigh residents. Guests attending the reopening will have the opportunity to tour the new facility and explore programs and services offered by the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.
The 17,000-square-foot community center replaces the old 10,000-square-foot building. The new facility includes an improved gymnasium, large dividable meeting/class room, weight room, warming kitchen, office/reception area, and restrooms with shower facilities. Site improvements include a new playground, basketball court, improved parking areas and public art.
In addition to energy-efficient building and mechanical system design, other sustainable design features includes a cistern and LED parking lot lights. The new facility is targeted for LEED Silver certification.
The public participated in the feasibility study stage, design phase and the most recent program input survey process.
Funding for the project funding was provided in the 2007 Parks and Recreation Bond Referendum approved by Raleigh voters.
