Money Falls from Truck

News posted Jan. 19, 2017 - 7:00 pm

At about 8 a.m. today, Raleigh Police Department officers responded to a report of money being picked up by motorists who had stopped in Interstate 40's eastbound lanes near the U.S. 1 exit. All of the stopped vehicles and most of the money were gone by the time officers arrived.

Here's what happened. A Loomis armored truck was traveling east on the Interstate when its back door inadvertently opened as an employee inside the truck was trying to better secure it. A "brick" of money fell from the open door and $20 bills were scattered when it hit the pavement.

No wrecks or injuries were reported in conjunction with stopped vehicles or the cleanup activity.

Some people have contacted Loomis and returned money recovered at the scene. Anyone else wishing to do so may call 919-469-5992 or return it do the company's facility at 125 Nova Dr. in Morrisville.

A 911 call recording concerning the incident is linked below. As required by § 132-1.4, information has been redacted from the call, and its audio has been altered to disguise the caller’s natural voice. The caller is a male.
