Raleigh City Council Takes Oath of Office

The newly elected Raleigh City Council members gathered Monday evening to take their oath of office at a public ceremony held in Meymandi Concert Hall at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts.

The City Council gained two new members: Stef Mendell, District E, and Nicole Stewart, At-large. Returning council members are Mayor Nancy McFarlane; Corey Branch of District C; David Cox of District B; Kay Crowder of District D; Russ Stephenson, At-large; and Richard “Dickie” Thompson, District A.

During her inauguration comments, Mayor McFarlane thanked the audience for their continued support, and City staff for being so creative, hardworking, and caring. She emphasized her commitment to Raleigh and its residents stating, “I am honored to serve as your mayor for the next two years while we continue the strategic planning and visioning that created this city that we love.”

While touching on the City’s thriving economy, growing arts, and dedication to being a TechHire City, Mayor McFarlane also stressed the importance of improving citizen engagement, stating that “parts of the City feel left out…and that they are not part of the discussion about how this City’s policies are formed.” She concluded by stating that she is excited about what the next two years will bring, including completion of a master plan for Dix Park, the opening of Union Station, renovations to Moore Square, and implementation of the beginning phases of a new transit system for Raleigh, Wake County, and the Triangle.

Monday evening’s swearing-in ceremony will air on the City’s RTN 11 (Raleigh Television Network) on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.
