Parks Division Volunteer Opportunities

Last Modified: January 31, 2012

There are many opportunities for your company, school, church or civic club to volunteer at one of Raleigh’s parks.

The department also offers an Adopt-a-Park Program that utilizes volunteers to enhance City parks and facilities.

If you are interested in any of the following park volunteer opportunities, contact Cindy TrumbowerEmail Address (919) 996-3292.

Deadheader at Raleigh Rose Garden

We are always looking for people who are interested in becoming a "Deadheader" (caregiver for the rose beds). All volunteers will be trained in the art of proper "deadheading" techniques. We ask that all Deadheaders volunteer a minimum of two hours per week per month. Volunteers are given rose beds to adopt and maintain from June - October.

Gardening/Landscaping

Many of our volunteers have the opportunity to do gardening and landscaping around our parks. Our Parks Department staff work closely with the volunteers for these projects.

Litter and debris removal

We get a lot of interest, especially from school and youth groups, to keep our parks beautified by helping to remove litter and debris.

Mulching

Many of our volunteers help with mulching in our parks. Mulching is one of the most beneficial things you can do for soil and plants.

Painting

Many volunteer jobs include painting of buildings, railings and other parks and recreation structures. Painting can really help keep our buildings look up to date.

Planting Annuals

Many of our volunteers have the responsibility of planting annuals around our City parks. Parks staff work closely with the volunteers describing the different types of annuals and showing them the best ways to plant.

Playground Rehabilitation

Raleigh Parks and Recreation operates and maintains over 65 playgrounds around the City. Each year the City works to rehabilitate some of the older playgrounds with the help of many volunteers.

Trail Maintenance

The Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains over 60 miles of Greenway trails. The trails are used to connect people to various parks and attractions. Volunteers are needed to help maintain these trails.
