Free Bulky Load Pick Up

Last Modified: March 30, 2012
Items that do not fit in the garbage cart may be considered bulky trash.

Free collection is available for items that do not fit into the garbage cart. Solid Waste Services does not pick up bulky loads from apartment complexes or any community that use a dumpster for garbage collection. These communities must pay for a special load no matter what items need to be picked up.

Bulky Load Collection is offered for disposal of:

  • furniture
  • small appliances (microwaves, toasters, hair dryers, etc.)
  • mattresses and box springs
  • lawn equipment
  • and similar household items

A Bulky Load at a single address is limited to four (4) cubic yards, which is equivalent to filling the bed of a standard-size pickup truck. To maintain the efficiency of our crews, please accumulate several items prior to scheduling this special collection.

Note: If you schedule a free Bulky Load Collection and it is deemed to be in excess of 4 cubic yards you may be assessed the fee of $50 for a Special Load Collection.

Yard waste, large appliances, computers and televisions are not included in Bulky Load as these items are banned from landfill disposal. You must request and purchase a Special Load Collection for these items. Excess bags of garbage that would normally be put in the garbage cart will not be collected. No odor-causing waste will be collected.

Scheduling

You must call ahead to schedule a Bulky Load Collection. A collection for a specific address can be scheduled no more often than every 90 days. You can schedule collection by calling Solid Waste Services customer service at 919-996-6890. Once your collection has been arranged, place all items at the curb as Solid Waste Services employees will not enter your yard to collect items for disposal.

Items placed at curbside without scheduling ahead for a bulky load collection will not be picked up by regular garbage, recycling or yard waste collection crews, and are subject to or will be assessed administrative fees and civil penalties according to Section 7 of Raleigh City Code.

When scheduling a pick up, please have the following information available:

1. Name
2. Address
3. Daytime phone number
4. Description of item(s) to be collected
5. Regular collection day

Additional Details

  • Bulky items may not exceed a pickup truck load per collection. Repeat bulky load collections at the same address may be denied.
  • Place the materials at the curb no earlier than the noon of the day before the collection day.
  • Materials from contracted jobs or land clearing will NOT be collected.
  • Construction or building materials will NOT be collected.
