Nature Crafts-Winter
Come join Walnut Creek Wetland Staff and use natural materials to create fun crafts. Join us to make pine cones into bird feeders or leaves into placemats. Items found in nature will provide nifty winter decorations. All materials provided. Program held Friday, February 17th from 2:00 to 3:30 pm. This program is $3 and open to ages 5 years and older. Registration is required four days prior to the program.
February Nature Play Day
Come to Wilkerson Nature Preserve anytime between 11 am and 3 pm on Friday, February 17th and enjoy our latest ideas for playing in nature. Children of all ages, as well as the young at heart, are welcome to join us for imaginative play in a natural setting. We'll provide all the materials. Please dress for the weather and be ready to get messy. Who knows what the weather will bring; we're still waiting to play in the snow! No class limit and no fee.
Great Backyard Bird Count
Do you like birds? Have you ever wanted to get involved in a bird count but didn't know how? Come join us at Durant Nature Park for the annual Great Backyard Bird Count. People of all ages and birding abilities join together during this four day weekend to count birds and submit their data which is used by scientist and bird experts. We'll get you started by counting the birds at Durant and by giving you all the information you need to go home and count the birds in your own backyard. This is a fun, family activity where your count really counts! Bird count held Saturday, February 18th from 9-10:30 am. The event is free and for ages 6 and up. Please pre-register four days prior to the event. Class meets at the Park Office which is located at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd.
Winter at Walnut Creek
Is your child curious about where our local wildlife spends the winter? Through a hands-on activity, craft and nature hike (if weather permits), we'll learn about migration and hibernation. Program held at Walnut Creek Wetland Center on Saturday, February 18th from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm. This program is $3 and open to ages 8-15 years. Registration is required four days prior to the program.
Snakes Alive!
Learn why snakes are important to our environment and some of the cool things they can do as we introduce you to some of our friendly park snakes. Come dressed to paint as we bring to life some wooden snakes using paints and a little imagination! Class held Tuesday, February 21st from 10-11:30 am. Fee is $3 and for ages 6-12 years of age. Please pre-register four days prior to the event. Class meets at the Training Lodge which is located at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd.
Worm Composting for Adults
Red wiggler worms can help you reduce smelly garbage and benefit your garden. Learn how easy it is to set up a home worm bin in this interactive workshop.
The cost of the class includes instruction and all materials needed to set up your own worm bin. Program held at Walnut Creek Wetland Center on Wednesday, February 22nd form 4:00 to 6:00 PM. This program is $20 and open to ages 16 years and older. Registration is required four days prior to the program.
Kid's Nature Night
Do you need a little time to yourself at the end of the week? Drop your kids off with us for a fun Friday night. We'll learn about nature, explore outside, play games and do a craft. The activities will all be related to that night's featured animated movie. We will have popcorn and a big movie screen! Program held at Walnut Creek Wetland Center on Friday, February 24th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. This program is $5 and open to ages 6-11 years. Registration is required four days prior to the program.
Wildlife for Wee Ones
Join us to learn about where the reptiles, birds, mammals and bugs at the Walnut Creek Wetland Center spend the winter. We will read a book, do a fun activity to learn about hibernation and take a trip outside if weather permits. Program held at Walnut Creek Wetland Center on Saturday, February 25th from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm. This program is $3 and open to ages 3-6 years. Registration is required four days prior to the program.
Winter Bird Visitors
Come to Wilkerson Nature Preserve where children ages 6-12 years will learn about birds and how to "spy" on them. We'll do a winter bird count at our feeders. Then, we'll scout several habitats on the preserve to see as many different kinds of birds as possible. Bring your binoculars or borrow a pair from the park. Fee is $3 per participant. Date is Saturday, February 25, from 10:30 am - Noon. Please register at least two days in advance online.
Little Nature Hikers
Join a nature instructor and other families for a guided walk around the park with your child. Meet other families in your community and learn about nature. We'll see birds, insects and maybe even a few mammals and reptiles. Strollers are welcome. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Program held at Laurel Hills Park on Wednesday, March 7 from 10:30-11:15am. Program is for ages 2-5 year olds and fee is $2. Please pre-register four days in advance.
Stream Explorers
On Saturday, March 10, youth ages 6-12 will follow a stream channel in the park to find out where water goes. We'll explore how water moves and affects rocks and soil. Where is the streambed the widest and deepest and why? Come dressed for the weather and wear old shoes or boots you don't mind getting wet. This program runs from 2-3:30 pm at Wilkerson Nature Preserve and the fee is $3 per participant. Please register at least two days in advance online.
Junior Gardeners
Celebrate St. Patrick's Day by planting something green! We will decorate a flower pot, plant a seed and you can take it home to watch it grow. We'll learn how to care for your seed and the parts of a plant. Program held at Pullen Community Center on Friday, March 16 from 10:30-11:30am. Program is for ages 5-10 years and fee is $5. Please pre-register four days in advance.
Fairy Houses
Celebrate St. Patrick's Day by creating a fairy house in the woods for a mouse, bug, toad or other woodland fairy. We'll use our imaginations and natural materials to make our special creations. You'll want to come back to the park after the program to find out if any fairies have moved into your house. This program is designed for a parent or other adult to attend with their preschooler, age 3-5 years. Program will be held on Saturday, March 17th from Wilkerson Nature Preserve from 10:30 am to noon. Fee is $3 per child; no charge for adults. Please register at least two days in advance online.

Spring Scavenger Hike
Come out to Wilkerson Nature Preserve and take a hike to look for wildflowers and other signs of spring. We'll have a little friendly competition to see which families or teams can find the most and the best examples of spring's arrival. Prizes will be awarded! The program will be held on Sunday, March 25, from 2-4 pm. All ages are welcome. Children under 8 years old should be accompanied by an adult. The fee is $3 per participant. Please register at least two days in advance online.
Sly as a Fox
Fox sightings are becoming more commonplace, yet fox are by nature, elusive and shy animals. Learn what fox like to eat, where they sleep, and how to tell they've been around, as we hike in search of evidence of fox! We'll practice listening with "fox ears" and "walking like a fox" in this fun, hands-on program. A "real" fox will be on display and each participant will get to make a fox track to take home. Join us on Saturday, March 10 from 2-3 pm. Program is for ages 5-12 years of age and fee is $3. Please pre-register four days prior to the event. Class meets at the Training Lodge which is located at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd.
Salamander Sleuth
Become a salamander sleuth as we look under rocks, logs, leaf litter and inside vernal pools to "sniff" out the places salamanders and their eggs can be found. Learn about the life cycle of the salamander, the types of salamanders that can be found in the park, plus make your very own salamander to take home! Program held Friday, March 16 from 2-4 pm. Program is for ages 6-12 years of age and fee is $6. Please pre-register four days prior to the event. Class meets at the Training Lodge which is located at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd.
A Family Walk in the Park at Durant Nature Park
Bring the whole family for a leisurely walk to explore the park after a long day at work (or school). We'll figure out what nature activity is going on in the park and we'll share it with you! Parent must register and accompany child. Join us on Tuesday, March 20 from 6-7 pm. Program is for all ages and fee is $1. Please pre-register four days prior to the event. Class meets at the Park Office which is located at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd.
Any Fish You Wish
See if the fish are biting by joining us at the lake for a fun evening of fishing! Learn abut the fish that can be found in our lake and play a fun casting game before wetting a line of your own. We'll provide the bait, the rod and hopefully the fish. Parent must register and accompany child. Program held Thursday, March 22 from 6-7 pm. Program is open for all ages and fee is $2.Please pre-register four days prior to the event. Class meets at the Park Office which is located at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd.
Grandparent's Day
Grandparents and their grandchildren share a special bond. Strengthen this bond by enjoying a day devoted to spending time in nature together. Park staff will guide you on a memory filled day of fishing, hands-on nature exploration, crafts, animal show and tells and special surprises. Bring a picnic lunch. Join us on March 30 from 10 am-2 pm, program is for ages 5-12 years and fee is $10. Please pre-register four days prior to the event. Class meets at the Training Lodge which is located at the North entrance to the park off of Durant Rd.
