Upcoming Classes
Weaving for Kids
On Monday evening February 28th, from 4 - 5:30pm, Pullen Arts Center is hosting "Weaving for Kids", with Anne Terry. Kids, come learn to weave at Pullen Arts Center! You can learn how to make your own fabric using just a board and some yarn! Project possibilities are endless once you know the basic skills! We'll show you how to weave with yarn and with paper. Bookmaking for Kids
Starting on Monday's, February 20th, from 1 - 3pm, Pullen Arts Center is hosting "Bookmaking for Kids", an introductory bookmaking class with instructor Jenny Mahaffey. In each one day class, students will make their own book from scratch! Each class is a separate one day session, and students learn a different technique and make a different type of book each day. Students may register for just one class or for all of them. The class sessions are long stitch (January), accordion bound (February), chain fold (March), and pamphlet stitch (April). All supplies provided, but donations of kid-friendly magazines are appreciated. The barcode for this first class session is 116816. Jewelry: Hydraulic Press
On Friday mornings, February 17th - March 23rd, from 10am - 12:30pm, Pullen Arts Center is hosting "Hydraulic Press", a specialty jewelry class with instructor Amy Veatch. Learn how to emboss, raise metal, and make hollow forms while maintaining surface embellishment. Prerequisite: Beginning Jewelry at Pullen Arts. Silver ordered 1st class (approx. $30). Poetry Writing: Building a Firm Foundation in Craft
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Creative Poetry Writing", on Saturdays February 25th - March 31st, from 10:30am - 1pm, with instructor Tina Clark. Developing your poetry skills does for creative writing what laying down a solid foundation does for the strength of a house. As a poet, one develops an ear for the sounds of language, and learns how to evoke an experience, idea, or feeling otherwise left buried beyond consciousness. This course provides students with a chance to develop and revise poems with in-class instruction, poetry prompts, and workshops. Instruction and exercises on the craft of poetry will offer inspiration and insight into capturing one's ideas, feelings, and experiences in poems. Workshops will offer students of all experience levels a friendly place to share their work, give and receive constructive criticism, and be inspired by one another. Continuing Drawing
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Continuing Drawing", on Monday evenings February 20th - March 26th, from 7 - 9:30pm, with instructor Leslie Pruneau. This course is designed to enhance the students' drawing skills or to refresh your techniques if they are a bit 'rusty'. Creating cohesive drawings can be worked out through many different steps. From arranging forms and lines on a picture plain, to accomplishing subtle textures, we will push compositions to the edge to compose several finished works. As I always say, 'Draw, draw, draw!' Continuing Oils
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Continuing Oils", on Wednesday evenings February 22nd - March 28th, from 7 - 9:30pm, with instructor Leslie Pruneau. This class is for those who have some prior experience working with oil paints. Students will further explore oil painting techniques and will be encouraged to develop their own style. Personal instruction and critiques will help strengthen skills. Framing and exhibiting work will also be discussed. Students bring in their own materials, supply list provided. The Fine Art of Fine Art Photography
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "The Fine Art of Fine Art Photography", on Monday evenings February 20th - March 26th, from 7 - 9pm, with instructor Barbara Blaisdell. This will be a six week course covering the aesthetics and techniques of digital photography. We will discuss the differences between a snapshot and a fine art image and how you get from one to the other. We will cover such topics as previsualization, following the light, composition, camera settings & equipment, work flow and post processing. Anyone with a digital camera will be able to utilize this course instruction to help them become a better photographer. Bring your digital camera and camera manual to class. Bookmaking: Coptic Book with Headband
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Coptic Book with Headband", on Thursday evenings March 22nd - April 12th, from 6:30-9pm, with Kathy Steinsberger. Coptic bound books make great journals, drawing and sketch books, wedding and celebration sign-in books, and beautiful works of art. Kathy Steinsberger leads you in making a small book with a beautiful exposed binding of chain-stitched linen, pastepaper-covered bookboard covers, and pages of mouldmade italian paper. Finish the book with a stitched headband along the top and bottom of the spine. Supply fee of $25-35 payable to instructor on first class. The barcode for this class is 116819. Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Continuing Metals", offered on Wednesday and Monday evenings, starting March 7th and March 12th, from 7 - 9:30pm, with instructors Amy Veatch and Julie Brooks. Continue to expand your skills working independently and on assigned projects to further your knowledge of jewelry techniques. Explore methods of stone setting and hollow form construction. Silver supplies ordered first class (approx. $30). Optional kits will be available for $25. The kits will provide each student with solder, sawblades, drill bit, sandpaper and a small amount of copper to get started on projects. Prerequisite: Beginning Metal Jewelry at Pullen Arts. Painting: Large Format Encaustic Painting
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Large Format Encaustic Painting", on Wednesday evenings March 7th - April 11th, from 7 - 9:30pm, with instructor Anna Podris. Students will focus on painting a larger encaustic painting of 11 x 14' up to 24 x 24' or a little larger. Students will choose their own subject matter and utilize encaustic techniques to complete their paintings. We will discuss what technique will best translate each student's idea. It's best to have taken a beginning encaustic class first, but beginners are also welcome. A supply fee of $40 will be due at the first class meeting. The barcode for this class is 117362. Pottery: 4 Faces in 4 Weeks
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "4 Faces in 4 Weeks", on Thursday mornings March 8th - March 29th, from 10am - 12:30pm, with instructor Cheryl Weisz.
A series of four classes: one face each class will allow participants to intensely study how to sculpt facial features of different ages: a baby, a child, a woman and a man and different cultures. Deep slab, high relief 5'x 5' tile sculptures become wall hangings that can be beautiful unglazed, glazed or stained. Students will learn techniques using different tools to create female and male features. Expression studies will add interest and fun. White clay is recommended. Skill level: Easy. Printmaking: Screen Printing
Pullen Arts Center is hosting,"Screen Printing", on Thursday evenings March 1st - April 5th, from 6-9pm, with instructor Keith Norval. If you want to make your own t-shirts, this is the class for you. Get your screens, ink and squeegee ready. We will cover applying emulsion, exposing the screen and printing techniques. Portrait Drawing
On Saturday and Sunday, February 25th & 26th, the Pullen Arts Center is hosting "Portrait Drawing", a drawing workshop from 9am - 12pm with instructor Liz Hume. A course on drawing portraits from photographs. We will cover the process from beginning to end, including the essential first step of choosing a quality photograph. We will discuss proportions, anatomy, and modeling of the head. The students will work from general to specific, first focusing on the large forms and shapes, then working towards the smaller details. Emphasis will be placed on creating an accurate and dynamic portrait. Students may bring their own photographs to work from, or they can choose from photos provided by the instructor. Supply list provided with receipt (approximately $10-$15). Some previous drawing experience required; this is an intermediate to advanced level class. The barcode for this workshop is 117496. Jewelry: Etching
On Saturday & Sunday, February 25th & 26th, from 9am - 4pm, the Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Jewelry Etching", a specialty jewelry workshop with visiting artist Mary Ann Scherr. Etching on metal adds personal expression to any surface and enhances the design structure. With a series of related exercises, participants will use a sketching system that quickly provides an individual response. This approach does not require serious drawing skills to create a handsome design. A project will be completed in the two day workshop. The barcode for this workshop is 118669. Beyond Basic Stained Glass
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Beyond Basic Stained Glass", on Wednesday and Thursday February 29th & March 1st, from 9am - 5pm, with instructor Jean Cheely. In this class we are going to the next level in stained glass. After you've learned the basics of stained glass, make this exciting jump to incorporating 'found objects' into your stunning stained glass panel. We will talk about design elements and various shapes for panels. Get ready for this fun and intense 15 hour workshop. All supplies included except glass. Gourd Craft: Making a Gourd Bowl
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Making a Gourd Bowl", on Thursday February 23rd, from 6 - 9pm, with instructor Mary Ann Rood. Making a gourd bowl and decorating its rim: First, you will learn how to make a medium-sized gourd sit level. Next comes cutting a straight top, cleaning the interior, spray painting the interior, drilling holes to attach a decorative rim treatment and attaching it. Options will include vine, twine, and beads. Supply fee of $10 will be paid to the instructor. The barcode for this class is 117484. Fibers: Plushie Zipper Mouth Monsters
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Plushie Zipper Mouth Monsters", on Saturday and Sunday, March 17th & March 18th, from 9am - 4pm, with instructor Addison Paige. They're great fun! These stuffed plush monsters are a wonderful way to express your imagination and travel on the wild side. Different construction methods and tricks will be discussed. Almost any fabric will work and this is a good way to recycle old clothes. And you can embellish them with just about anything that can be sewn down. Your monsters can be as scary or loveable as you'd like. Here is a chance to try something new and to make great gifts; the class could even be a bonding experience for you and your teenager. A sewing machine isn't necessary but will speed things along. Addison has been a fiber artist working in several different media over the last 15 years but making monsters has been the most fun and entertaining project she has worked with. Printmaking: Printed Notecards
Pullen Arts Center is hosting, "Printed Notecards", a one day workshop on Saturday March 3rd, from 10am - 4pm, with instructor Susan Soper.
Using several exciting printmaking techniques students will create their own original notecards. Emphasis will be on hand-printing techniques, as well as using a basic block press. Color and black & white printing will be explored along with hand coloring techniques. A supply fee of $15 will be due to instructor at the beginning of the class. Upcoming Exhibitions
The Earring Challenge 2011
For the past year, Julie Brooks, Megan Clark, Suzanne Krill, Lillian Jones and Betty McKim have challenged themselves to create a pair of earrings every week. The 2011 Earring Challenge exhibit showcases the 260 pairs of earrings and the design development process that evolved from this commitment. The exhibition will be on display at the Pullen Arts Center from January 15th - February 28th.
