Dr. Bill and Merrie Hedrick Homestead at Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve Dedication

News posted Aug. 30, 2017 - 11:22 am

The City of Raleigh dedicates the Dr. Bill and Merrie Hedrick Homestead at Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve on Friday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. This project includes renovation of the existing farmhouse to allow opportunities for environmental education, art programming, and general recreation. Interpretive signage has been installed to share history of the property with visitors. In addition, upgrades were made to the infrastructure. This project promotes sustainable development by minimizing site disturbance, eliminating the need to be connected to public utilities, implementing the City's first compost restroom facility, use of permeable pavement, on-site stormwater management, protection of wetlands and riparian buffers, use of native plants, use of regional materials, and solar lighting. Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve integrates self-directed recreation with sustainable building practices that enhance the site’s natural attributes.
