Annie Louise Wilkerson M.D. Nature Preserve Will Perform a Prescribed Burn

News posted Mar. 02, 2017 - 2:28 pm

The City of Raleigh will perform a prescribed burn at the Annie Louise Wilkerson M.D. Nature Preserve in March 2017. The NC Forest Service will implement and supervise the burn, which will measure two to three acres in size (about the size of a football field). City of Raleigh Parks Recreation and Cultural Resources staff will provide logistical assistance and safety equipment on site during the burn.

Very specific weather condition are required for a prescribed burn, therefore, the burn notification window may be only hours. The date and time of the burn will be posted on the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation, and Greenways Alerts webpage as soon as the information is available

Prescribed burns, along with other approaches like mowing, help maintain open areas consisting of mostly grasses and other native plants when repeated every two or three years. This type of plant community provides valuable food and cover for a wide variety of wildlife species.
