Property Tax

Each year, as part of the City's budget approval, the City Council sets a tax rate which is used to establish property taxes for the next fiscal year.  The total value of all the taxable property is known as the City's tax base.

Property taxes for the City of Raleigh are billed for and collected by the Wake County Revenue Department.  Their consolidated bill is normally mailed in July or early August and includes the county taxes, the city taxes, and a vehicle decal fee.  The 2007 tax rate for Wake County is $ .678 for each $100 in value.  The City tax rate is $ .435 per $100 valuation, and the City's vehicle decal fee is $25.00 per vehicle.

In addition, the City Council maintained a municipal service district for the downtown at a tax rate of $ .0786.  The special service district rate combines with the City's rate of $ .435 for a total of $ .5136.
