Downtown Raleigh Recycles!

Who Can Recycle?
Solid Waste Services offers curbside recycling service within Raleigh’s Central Business District.  The Central Business District, or CBD, is a an area bounded by Peace Street to the north, Blount Street to the east, Cabarrus Street to the south, and West Street to the west.  Most participants in this recycling program also use the City of Raleigh for curbside garbage collection.  However, companies that do not receive City garbage service may still be eligible for recycling collection and should contact Solid Waste Services for more information.

Why Recycle?
Recycling saves metal, plastic, paper and other valuable materials from the garbage and sends them to processing facilities where they can be made into new products.  By recycling, we conserve landfill space for items that really belong there.  Using recycled materials in manufacturing often uses less energy that making the same product from virgin materials, and can reduce emissions of pollutants into the air and water we depend on for our survival.

What Can Be Recycled?
Acceptable Materials

  • White paper (any color printing is fine)
  • Newspaper and all inserts
  • Corrugated cardboard boxes (no pizza boxes)
  • Chipboard (e.g. pasta, cookie, cereal boxes),
  • Magazines and catalogs
  • Aluminum beverage containers
  • Glass bottles and jars (any color),
  • Metal food cans
  • Plastic bottles (except those that held automotive fluids or other hazardous chemicals)

Please Don't Recycle:

  • Ceramic plates and mugs
  • Mirror or window glass
  • Plastic cups, plates and take-out containers
  • Paper cups, plates and napkins
  • Polystyrene food containers or packing "peanuts"
  • Waxed cardboard (used for frozen foods)
  • Electronic equipment of any kind

When is Recycling Collected?
Recyclables are collected Monday through Saturday of every week. Place recycling carts at the curb no earlier than 3:00 pm but no later than 4:00 pm on the day of pickup.

Businesses that receive City garbage service  should put out their green trash bags or carts at the same time.  Please help keep downtown Raleigh clean by removing all recycling and garbage containers  from the sidewalk by 9:30 am on the day following collection.

How Can You Get Involved?
We’ve designed a streamlined collection system to make recycling easy!  First, contact Solid Waste Services to see if your business is eligible to participate in recycling.  If it is, then recycling containers will be delivered to your business.  Most busineses use blue, 64-gallon roll carts.  The carts provide ample capacity, have lids to protect materials from wind and rain, and allow crews to safely empty materials into the recycling truck.  Smaller containers may be provided to businesses that don't have room for carts.

Corrugated cardboard boxes should be flattened and reduced to 3 feet by 3 feet in size before being stacked at the curb on collection days.

Who Is Recycling?

More than 120 organizations have joined  Downtown Raleigh Recycles! Active recyclers include restaurants, nightclubs, shops, law firms and coffeehouses. Each business owner receives a "We Recycle" window decal to show their patrons they care about the environment.  Participants are encouraged to subscribe to the quarterly electronic newsletter, "The View from the Cab."

***  In 2008, Downtown Raleigh Recycles! participants recycled over 700 tons. ***
