Stand Alones - Commercial and Residential - FAQ

While You Wait Permitting

Q.  When are stand alone permit applications accepted?

A.  Applications for stand-alone permits must be submitted before 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Permit applications submitted after 3:30 p.m. are not guaranteed to be processed the same business day.  The application form may be dropped off, but it will not be given priority over the new walk-ins that come in the following business day.

Q.  How long will it take to get a stand-alone permit (for building, electrical, mechanical, and/or plumbing)?

A.  The permit(s) is usually issued within an hour, if the application is submitted before 3:30 p.m. and there are no address issues.

Q.  What are the requirements for building a deck?

A.  A building permit is required to build a deck.  An electrical permit will be required if electrical outlets are to be installed on the deck.  Two copies of a plot plan/survey must be submitted with a completed permit application.  The deck must be drawn to engineers scale, showing its exact location.  The same criteria apply for the addition of a porch, or screened porch.

Q.  What do I need to finish my attic/basement?

A.  Plans are not required for work on an existing attic or basement.  Since the work does not involve an extension from the existing footprint, no plot plans are required.   A completed application form is required listing contractor information for all the trades involved.  Make sure to ask if they are doing electrical or plumbing work, which require permits.
