After Hours Inspections
Process Description:
The After-Hours Inspections program is a voluntary inspection service designed to provide contractors and homeowners with code certified inspectors after normal office business hours 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. After-Hours Inspections are dependent upon the availability of inspectors. The Inspections Department reserves the right to deny requests as appropriate and/or necessary.
Projects eligible for after-hours inspections are:
- New Construction
- Alterations
- Interior Completions
- Additions
- Change of Use
- Shell buildings
- Single Family Dwellings
A two (2) day notice is required to schedule an After-Hours Inspection. However, trade group supervisors have the discretion to waive this requirement when they deem necessary.

Exceptions to the process:
The After-Hour Inspections program is for non-emergency inspections only.
Are there any prerequisites to this process?
- Client must have a valid permit prior to scheduling an After-Hours Inspection
- Client must pay After-Hours Inspection fees prior to date of inspection
How do I start the process?
- Contact the Construction Division staff to request an After-Hours Inspection at (919) 516-2500 or in person located at One Exchange Plaza, Suite 504 Raleigh NC 27601
- Complete the top of the After-Hours Inspections application form and submit to Construction Division staff by fax: (919) 516-2689 or in person located at One Exchange Plaza, Suite 504 Raleigh NC 27601
- Staff will forward completed application to the respective trade group supervisor for scheduling
- All After-Hours Inspection scheduling must be approved by either the Construction Inspections Administrator or Inspections Director. The trade group supervisor will obtain this approval prior to scheduling the inspection
- Schedule will be confirmed with the client

What are the keys to success?
- Remember that the inspection must be scheduled 48 hours in advance
- After-Hours Inspections may be cancelled before 3:00 p.m. the day of the scheduled inspection
- No refunds will be issued for inspections cancelled after the 3:00 p.m. cancellation deadline
- Re-scheduled inspections will require a two (2) day notice
- All work must be complete and ready for inspection
- The contractor’s representative will need to be on site with job plans and permit card with a list of areas needing inspections
- Failure to meet the above requirements will result in the inspection being cancelled with no refund
What fees are involved and when do I pay them?
- Commercial fees will be charged at a rate of $125 per hour for each trade inspector
- Residential fees will be charged at a rate of $75 per hour for each trade inspector or multi-trade inspector (qualified to inspect all four trades)
- A three (3) hour minimum is required for After-Hours Inspections that require the inspector/inspectors to leave their personal residence on nights or weekends to perform said inspections
- A two (2) hour minimum is required when an inspector performs an After-Hours Inspection at the end of a normal work day and does not have to leave their personal residence
How long will this process take?
- The After-Hours Inspections scheduling process is completed the same day as requested during normal business hours. Remember that the inspection must be scheduled 48 hours in advance of the actual inspection taking place
- The inspection process is dependent upon the nature of the project – see minimum hours required above in the fee section
