African American Cultural Consortium
About 3 ½ years ago the City and County partnered together to hire the Freelon Group to perform a feasibility study for an African American Cultural Consortium (AACC). That study was completed in May 2005. In early 2008 the Raleigh City Council authorized a Phase II study to be conducted using a city owned project site, and the concept of having a larger mixed-use building with the AACC being a part of the building.
A Public Meeting was held on Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at the Urban Design Center (133 Fayetteville Street, Suite 100) to provide an update on the status of the City’s progress towards completing the program analysis and planning study for the African American Cultural Consortium (AACC). This meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the concept plan among the representatives of the AACC constituent organizations, stakeholders, and city staff members. The concept plan recommendations explore the opportunity for the co-location of the African American Cultural Complex, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Resource Center, and the Pope House Museum on one site bounded by South Wilmington Street, East Lenoir Street, and East South Street.
