What are the Hidden Costs of Free Parking?

Held November 2, 2006

The lecture focused on the connections between parking, transportation, land-use, the economy, and the environment.

  • Why is parking so expensive?
  • Why can't I find a parking space?

OUR PRESENTER
Dr. Donald Shoup is the author of The High Cost of Free Parking and an internationally renowned parking expert. His research on employer-paid parking led to the passage of California's parking cash-out law and to changes in the Internal Revenue Code to encourage parking cash out.

Professor Shoup presented a thought-provoking lecture and question-and-answer session. Drawing from years of research, Dr. Shoup addressed common misconceptions about the problem of parking and proposed new parking management strategies to improve quality of life in cities across the United States.
