Designing a 21st Century City Lecture Series

In November 2006 the Department of City Planning launched this award-winning lecture series to generate discussion about Raleigh’s critical challenges and opportunities.
Questions about the future loomed: How can Raleigh accommodate growth and successfully position itself in the global economy? How are other cities planning for infrastructure, sustainability, transit and density?
Citizens, elected officials, business owners, corporate leaders, students, urban designers, planners, architects, and policy makers gathered at the lectures to consider how decisions made today would affect Raleigh’s future. International and local experts shared their insights and foresights.
Approximately 1,000 people participated in the series, and many more have viewed them since through the City’s streaming video page provided by RTN (scroll down to the bottom of the page under Channel 11 Programs).
The Department took a hiatus from the lectures to focus on the Comprehensive Plan Update which, when complete, will provide policy guidance on many of the issues and public concerns the lectures raised. Plans are underway, however, to hold additional lectures as part of the update process, dates and topics to be determined.
