Downtown Wayfinding
Status:
The design package was unanimously approved by the Board of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance and Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Appearance Commission, Historic Districts Commission and City Council. The project is currently being reviewed by the NCDOT for an encroachment permit.
City Council has authorized staff to negotiate and execute a contract with Color-Ad Inc. for the fabrication and installation of the sign system. Construction and installation of the sign system will take place this summer in advance of the opening of the Convention Center.
The City of Raleigh has hired Corbin Design to help evaluate the existing downtown public signage and then design a new wayfinding system for Downtown Raleigh. Wayfinding is defined as “signs, maps, and other graphic or audible methods used to convey location and directions to travelers”. As our downtown changes and expands, it is important that we keep in mind how our visitors are directed to their destinations, whether they arrive on foot or by car, and how to make sure that their experience in our downtown is a positive one.
Corbin Design, based in Traverse City, Michigan, is well known for their experience and success designing wayfinding systems for downtowns, including Los Angeles, Kansas City, Indianapolis, and Atlanta. Their work can be viewed on their website, www.corbindesign.com
