Application Process
The City of Raleigh – Emergency Communications Center advertises openings for Telecommunicator I and Call Taker I positions. To be notified of future openings, you may fill out an Employment Interest Card in the City of Raleigh Personnel Department located in Room 101 of the Municipal Building at 22 West Hargett Street. When a position becomes available, the Interest Card will be mailed to you with pertinent information. How do I apply for a position?
Submit a completed City of Raleigh Full Time Employment Application (.doc Format) (.PDF Format ) on or before the closing date. A separate application is required for each position for which you are applying. Copies are accepted. Minimum requirements may be met through an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills needed to perform the job. All requested information must be furnished, as this information will be used to determine your qualifications for employment. If an item does not apply to you, or if there is no information to be given, please write the letters “NA” for Not Applicable. Please remember to sign and date your application. What happens once I submit my application?
After the closing date has expired, the Personnel Department will review the applicants and submit them to the Communications Director. Applications will be then further reviewed for recommendation for a skills test. If an applicant passes the skills test, they will be scheduled for a panel interview. *Please note, applications that are received after the closing date and applications that do not meet the minimum qualifications will not be forwarded to the hiring department.
What does the skills test consist of?
The skills test will consist of some multi-tasking, map reading, spelling, listening and reading comprehension and data entry, all very similar to what a Telecommunicator or Call Taker does. *Please note, testing will take between 3.5 – 4 hours.
What is the next step after the skills test?
If an applicant passes the skills test, they will be scheduled for a panel interview.
What happens after the interview?
After the panel interviews, a group of finalists will be selected for psychological evaluation and criminal background investigation, a control substance test, physical and a driver’s license history check will be administered. Finally the applicant will be scheduled to sit in the 9-1-1 center for 4 hours, and must then attend a City of Raleigh pre-boarding session to complete all necessary hiring forms. If the results are satisfactory, a conditional job offer will be extended and a start date will be assigned. Applicants will then go through a paid 12 week Training Academy.
What happens to my application if I am not selected for the position?
All applications are maintained by the Personnel Department. Applications can not be returned and can not be reactivated for other positions.
