Multi-Family Recycling Program

The City of Raleigh makes it easy for residents living in apartments, condominiums and townhouses to participate in the Raleigh Recycling program.  The program provides collection centers in convenient locations in multi-family communities.

Materials collected for recycling include:

·                     glass food and beverage containers

·                     food and beverage cans

·                     aluminum foil and trays

·                     plastic bottles

·                     plastic beverage rings

·                     milk, juice and laundry softener gable top cartons

·                     aseptic drink boxes

·                     newspaper and all inserts

·                     magazines and catalogs

·                     white paper, including junk mail

·                     paperboard, chipboard and paper tubes

To join the program and reduce the amount of solid waste we put in our landfills, complex managers should call Raleigh Recycling at 831-6890.  We will be happy to explain how easily multi-family residents can recycle right in their own complex.

Your residents will find recycling easy and rewarding.  Participation in the Raleigh Recycling Program shows your residents that you’re willing to do your part to reduce the amount of solid waste we put in the landfill.  You’ll also be playing a part in helping to save our natural resources.  Best of all – there are no additional fees for the service!  The City of Raleigh provides the recycling containers and the service.  The white "igloo" style recycling containers measure 54"D x 71"W and stand 48" high.  For communities with limited space, we can provide roll out carts, hot-stamped with our recycling logo and appropriate recycling decals listing acceptable recyclable materials.  Everyone can recycle!  Complex management distributes City provided educational handouts to their residents and is responsible for keeping the recycling containers and the area neat and clean inbetween weekly collection visits.

If you're ready to get started and do your part, email linda.leighton@ci.raleigh.nc.us.  Include the following information in the body of the email:

  • complex name
  • street address, zip code
  • contact name and phone number
  • FAX number
  • email address
  • number of household units in the complex
  • type of recycling container desired
  • how garbage is currently collected (dumpter, compactor, carts, etc.)

Multi-family communities are responsible for providing their own collection and recycling of corrugated cardboard.  This can be accomplished using a private hauler with an onsite cardboard dumpster or maintenance staff may collected it and take it to one of the City's Recycling Drop Off Centers at no charge.  Disposing of corrugated cardboard and aluminum cans in NC landfills is prohibited by law.

NOTE:  Only the property owner, management, homeowner association or board for apartment, condominium and townhouse complexes may request onsite recycling services from the City of Raleigh.  Individual tenants may not request service.

***   Recycling a ton of plastic bottles saves apporximately 74 gallons of gas.   ***
