Recycle and Win!

What is Recycle and Win?

The City of Raleigh, Coca-Cola and Harris Teeter are promoting good recycling practices throughout the city and randomly rewarding citizens who recycle properly with $50 Gift cards from Harris Teeter.

We are sponsoring this initiative to increase awareness for recycling, to increase recycling rates and educate all Raleigh citizens on the proper way to recycle.

The program starts on November 3, 2009 and runs through April 30, 2010.

How can I participate in the program?

Single-family homes in Raleigh's city limits will receive a brochure with an opt-in decal in the mail in October. Interested residents must place the sticker on the recycling bin & place it, with the sticker facing the street, on the curb with eligible recyclables in it for a chance to win.

How will I know if I've won?

The Prize Patrol will randomly visit neighborhoods looking for recycling bins with opt-in decal. If your bin has a sticker & contains proper recyclables you are eligible for a chance to receive a prize voucher in the mail.

The prize voucher will provide a number to call for information on claiming the prize.

Who is eligible to participate?

To be eligible you must:

Reside in the city of Raleigh
Be 18 years or over
Have access to curbside recycling
Place a “Recycle and Win” sticker on your recycle bin
Place the stickered bin (with sticker facing the street) on the curb on your recycling day
Recycle properly

How will the program be promoted?

The program will be promoted through direct mail, radio, web and newspaper.

When will the Prize Patrol be coming?

The Prize Patrol team plans to visit all areas of the city over the 6-month time frame. They will be doing this randomly each week so they could be in your area as soon as November 3rd or as late as April of 2010.

The Prize Patrol team will randomly check recycling bins on the day your recyclables will be picked up.

How does my bin qualify to win?

To qualify the sticker must be on the bin and the items inside the bin must be proper recyclables. If a bin has the sticker but does not contain any recyclables, it will not qualify to win. The recyclable items may but do not have to be Coca-Cola branded products.

How will I be notified if I have won?

You will be mailed a qualifying prize voucher that requests you to call the prize redemption phone number. After answering a few verifying questions, you will be directed as to how to redeem your gift card.

You will have 10 days to claim your prize.

The prizes are $50 Harris Teeter gift cards redeemable at any Harris Teeter store. A total of 260 gift cards throughout the six month-long program will be awarded. The gift cards are good for one year.

What if I don't want to participate?

If you do not want the Prize Patrol to review your materials, do not place a sticker on your bin.

What is the selection process?

The prize patrol team will make visits randomly all across the city looking for those recycling bins with opt-in stickers. If they select your bin and you have recycled properly, they will then send you a prize voucher in the mail. You simply call the number on the qualifying voucher and you will be directed as to how to redeem your $50 gift card.

You can only win once per year.

Will the Prize Patrol be identified?

Yes, they will be driving in a Recycle and Win identified vehicle.

How often will the Prize Patrol visit?

The Prize Patrol team will be visiting all areas of the city on a random basis so we can’t tell you when they will be back again.

How will the recycling program change?

There is no change to the City’s recycling program.

What if I don't get a sticker/lose it?

All Harris Teeter stores and the City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services administrative office will have spare stickers.

What items can be recycled?

Only the following Items can be placed in the bin:

  • Plastic bottles
  • Plastic beverage rings
  • Corrugated cardboard, 3’x3’ pieces
  • Glass food and beverage containers
  • Food and beverage cans
  • Gable top cartons
  • White Paper and Junk Mail
  • Paper board, chip board, and paper tubes
  • Newspaper (including inserts), magazines and catalogs
  • Drink boxes
  • Aluminum foil and trays free of food debris

What times will they be checking bins?

To ensure everyone has an opportunity to win, the Prize Patrol team may be checking neighborhoods before recycling trucks hit the streets at 7 a.m.

Which entities are not eligible?

Apartment complexes, condominium complexes, gated communities and businesses are not eligible to participate.

My neighbor won; so now I won't...

No, not necessarily. The Prize Patrol team will be randomly selecting areas in the city and yours may come up again at some point during the promotion.

What City resources were impacted?

The city may experience increased equipment maintenance and operational costs. However, these costs are not anticipated to be significant, and will be partially offset by decreased disposal costs at the landfill and increased revenue.

What benefits are there for Raleigh?

It is estimated that recycling rates will increase anywhere between a .05% - 5%. We will be monitoring the program to determine the impact as the program progresses.

What is the role of the City of Raleigh?

The city council approved the partnership with Coca-Cola in October 2009. The partnership supports the City’s overall goal to increase residential recycling. The City’s role is to: 1) Provide input and approval of educational materials, 2) Maintain the normal collection schedule for recycling, 3) Have knowledgeable customer service representatives to answer citizen calls.

What is Raleigh recycling setout now?

The average set out rate is approximately 73%.

How do I obtain a recycling bin?

All Raleigh households receiving curbside garbage collection also receive one recycling bin free from the Solid Waste Services Department. Residents wishing to have more than one recycling bin may purchase additional ones from the city or use other similar size and shaped containers such as laundry baskets, milks crates or boxes.
