Raleigh residents can improve their skills as leaders in the community by attending the Citizens Leadership Academy, a free series of classes offered by the Community Services Department.
Classes for the spring 2010 session of the Citizens Leadership Academy take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays from March 4 to May 27 at Glen Eden Pilot Neighborhood Center, 1500 Glen Eden Drive.
The session is divided into three modules of four classes each. You can attend one, two or all three modules. As you complete each module, you will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. When you complete all three modules, you will receive the Academy Leadership Plaque.
The Citizens Leadership Academy is offered each spring and fall. This provides participants the flexibility to complete all three modules over the course of a year.
Graduates of the Citizens Leadership Academy have gone on to take leadership roles in Raleigh’s Citizens Advisory Councils and on City boards and commissions.
The topics of the modules include leadership development, effective communication and Asset-Based Community Development, a philosophy that encourages people to make decisions and draw on their own talents and resources to improve their neighborhoods. Attendance is limited to 25 people per module to encourage lively classroom discussion and interaction.
