The Inspections Department is responsible for enforcing the uniform building codes established by the State of North Carolina, the North Carolina Rehabilitation Code, as well as local ordinances within the City of Raleigh and its extraterritorial jurisdiction.

This department consists of 153 personnel. Organizationally, the department functions through five (5) divisions. Each division is responsible for an area of expertise namely: AdministrationConstructionHousing/EnvironmentalPermits, and Zoning.

The Administration Division includes the Director and administrative support staff. The Permits Division is responsible for reviewing construction plans for code compliance and issuing permits. The Housing/Environmental Division enforces the City’s minimum housing and public nuisance codes. The Construction Division is responsible for assuring that all residential and commercial construction meets the applicable Building Code requirements and the Zoning Division enforces the City’s land use and sign regulations.

The Inspections Department’s responsibilities include enforcement of uniform building construction codes, zoning and minimum housing standards. The department provides a code enforcement program within the framework of applicable policies, procedures, instructions and state and local laws to protect the health, safety, and general welfare of the citizens within the jurisdictional area of the City of Raleigh.

How are we doing? By completing this Request Form let us know your concerns, suggestions, complaints, or compliments.  *Do not schedule inspections on request form.

Hours of Operation:  Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. (excluding all scheduled holidays).  The Permits Division provides limited service during the hours of 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. on Wednesdays to allow for staff training.
