What is GIS?
GIS, Maps, and Digital Data
GIS Day 2008

The City of Raleigh Geographic Information Services (GIS) Division is responsible for the support and maintenance of the City’s GIS program.  Support and maintenance includes:

  • Application development, done by either the GIS staff or contracted out to vendors;
  • Database creation & maintenance, both graphic and attribute databases;
  • Hardware and software support;
  • Software training;
  • Data translation and distribution

In addition to working with other City of Raleigh departments and contractors, the GIS Division shares close ties to Wake County GIS.  The City of Raleigh and Wake County established GIS systems which share live data on-line.  This live data sharing by the City and County is unique and has not been duplicated as successfully anywhere else in the country.

Mission Statement:
To develop and maintain land based business solutions that improve the delivery of City services; create and maintain spatially related information to support City departments and their customers; and promote easy access to geographic information.
