City To Seek Stimulus Package Funds For Utility And Stormwater Improvements
The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously on April 7 to apply for funds from the federal economic stimulus package to pay for improvements to the City’s wastewater, drinking water and stormwater systems.
The resolution approved by council members authorizes City Manager J. Russell Allen to seek grants and loans from the economic stimulus package. Stimulus funding is being made available through the North Carolina State Revolving Fund. Projects selected by the State for stimulus funding will be eligible for up to $3 million in no-interest loans or grants. The City of Raleigh also must provide funds for the selected projects.
The City is seeking stimulus funding for 11 wastewater, drinking water and stormwater improvement projects. The projects total approximately $40 million. The following is a list of the projects with total cost:
- Solar-powered de-stratification mixers at Lake Benson, $392,000;
- Solar-powered potable water storage tank mixers, $1.8 million;
- Lake Johnson Dam improvements, $3.7 million;
- Crabtree Creek north bank interceptor sewer replacement project, $11 million;
- Cemetery Branch sanitary sewer interceptor replacement project, $2.8 million;
- Southeast Beaverdam Creek sanitary sewer interceptor replacement project, $2 million;
- Southeast Raleigh reuse distribution system expansion, phases 3 and 4, $7 million;
- Dempsey E. Benton Water Treatment Plant backwash waste facility, $6.3 million;
- Rainwater harvesting at City fire stations, $465,735;
- Enhance stormwater infiltration at the Market at Colonnade, $1.1 million; and,
- Upper Longview Lake and Stream rehabilitation project, $3.3 million.
