Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities
Helping people with disabilities in the Raleigh area participate in the economic and social life of the community. To this end, the committee promotes employment of persons with disabilities, communicates to local leaders and the general public on the needs of persons with disabilities and relevant policy issues, and sponsors other activities benefiting persons with disabilities and their families. The committee also advises the Raleigh City Council and the Mayor on the needs and concerns of Raleigh citizens with disabilities in the areas of education, recreation, employment, transportation, and housing.
Our Goals
- Advise the Mayor and City Council on matters of concern to citizens with disabilities
- Address environmental and attitudinal barriers preventing equal access by citizens with disabilities to education, recreation, employment, transportation, and housing
- Promote public awareness of the talents and abilities of persons with disabilities
- Inform citizens with disabilities of the programs, services, and opportunities available to them within both the public and private sectors
Meeting Information
Our meetings are held the third Thursday of every month from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm. We meet in Room 305 of the City Municipal Building on the corner of West Hargett Street and Dawson Street, Downtown Raleigh.

Programs:
We sponsor the following committee programs for the citizens with disabilities in the Raleigh community:
- Awareness Committee
Awareness and education play a large role in the employment of persons with disabilities. For this reason, the committee presents seminars targeted to reach personnel officers and other representatives of major Raleigh area employers. The presenters speak with conviction, and from personal experience, about employing persons with disabilities. Committee members also make an effort to acquaint employers with adaptive equipment that enhances the working skills of the person with a disability.
- Housing Committee
The Housing Committee acts as a liaison between the City of Raleigh and its citizens in providing direction on availability and accessibility issues regarding housing in the Raleigh area. The committee works closely with individuals and families relocating to the area seeking affordable, accessible housing and with those who are seeking a new, more accessible place to live.
- Transportation Committee
The Transportation Committee acts a liaison between the City of Raleigh and its citizens in providing direction on accessibility issues regarding transportation in the Raleigh area. The committee works closely with the city to ensure that various transportation needs are being addressed concerning the paratransit system.
