Veterans Day will also be the day we celebrate Raleigh's "sister city" in France, Compiegne. The day will begin with a rededication of Parc Compiegne, a slight, green oasis of open space between Chamberlain Street and Logan Court. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. in the McCain Gallery. More information

  • Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker and university Chancellor Dr. James Oblinger signed an agreement (link to video) that transferred the historic fire bell back into the City’s custody. The bell is the oldest relic of the Raleigh Fire Department. After cleaning and restoration, the bell may be placed in the $226 million public safety building on which construction is to begin next year.

Attending the sixth annual Clarence E. Lightner Endowment Youth Leadership Banquet. The banquet will serve as a benefit fundraiser to continue programs of the youth leadership academy that was established in honor of the late mayor. More details about the Clarence E.   • Participating in the Salvation Army Kettle Kick-Off on the steps of the Wake County Courthouse. Mayor Meeker was among the first to ring the bell and place money in the kettle. Though donations to the organization are down this year, demands have increased by 30 to 35 percent.
