Raleigh Historic Districts Commission
Serves as the City Council's official historic preservation advisory body to identify, preserve, protect, and educate the public about Raleigh's historic resources. The RHDC consists of twelve members, appointed by City Council to overlapping two-year terms. Members have a demonstrated interest or training in fields related to historic preservation, and reside within the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction (at least one-third must live or own property in designated historic overlay districts).
Predecessor organization established by Mayor December 18, 1961; historic districts commission established by Ordinance No. (1973) 484, Revised by Ordinance (1992) 66 TC 399 - 12 Members
The commission's significant activities include:
1. Inventory historically-significant properties
2. Make recommendations to City Council regarding:

designation of historic landmarks or districts
-
changes to ordinances affecting historic preservation
-
community preservation efforts coordinated and strengthened
-
acquisition of properties by the city
3. Review and act on proposals for exterior changes to historic landmarks and properties in historic districts
4. Issue Certificates of Appropriateness
5. Study and recommend revisions to historic preservation element of the City's Comprehensive Plan
6. Restore, preserve, operate, or own historic properties
7. Conduct educational programs
8. Provide design review assistance on minor work proposals (staff) and on major exterior changes (Design Review Advisory Committee)
9. Publish books and periodicals relative to the City's historic preservation program such as:

"A Primer for Property Owners & Residents of Raleigh Historic Districts"

"In the Districts" - a tri-annual newsletter

"Culture Town: Life in Raleigh's African American Communities"

"Early Raleigh Neighborhoods: Boylan Heights, Cameron Park, Downtown, Glenwood"
Meeting Dates:
The Raleigh Historic Districts Commission meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 a.m. in Room 305 of the Raleigh Municipal Building, 222 West Hargett Street.
The Certificate of Appropriateness Committee generally meets on the first Monday of the month at 4:00 p.m. in Room 305 (check for holidays).
The Executive Committee meets on the Wednesday preceding the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 a.m. in Room 312 of the One Exchange Plaza building.
The Research Committee meets on the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 a.m. in Room 312 of the One Exchange Plaza building.
The Public Relations/Education Committee meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. in Room 312 of the One Exchange Plaza building.
Some meeting dates may differ from these times due to holidays; check with commission staff to verify a particular meeting time and place if you are planning to attend.
Commission and committee meetings are open to the public. Meetings are subject to change following public notice of at least 48 hours.
