Forest Ridge Park

Background:

Forest Ridge is a 586-acre peninsula of Falls Lake located between Falls dam and Highway 98.  It is currently owned by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and managed by North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR). The City of Raleigh and these two agencies have agreed to participate in a multi-agency partnership to participate in the preparation of the Forest Ridge Park Master Plan for this site. Funds for Phase 1 Development were approved by the public in the 2003 Park Bond Referendum.

Status:

The City Council on July 11, 2006, adopted the Master Plan for Forest Ridge Park. The major elements included in the plan are an adventure education center, ropes course and climbing wall, lakeside center, multi-use activity areas, an adventure education overnight lodge, mountain biking and hiking trails, and secondary south entrance with parking, picnic shelter, disc golf and trails. In December 2006, the City of Raleigh engaged a design consultant to prepare construction documents for the first phase improvements in the park. The improvements are proposed to be one multi-use activity area, the trail to the point, a welcome center, ropes course and climbing wall. In addition, documents are being prepared to support the City’s effort to secure a sublease of the property from North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

On July 7, 2008 the Army Corps of Engineers approved the City of Raleigh to move forward with the selected consultant to begin the development of construction drawings for Phase I of the project.  Phase I will include a park center, related parking, restrooms and shelters. The Wake County Board of Adjustments approved the park as a permitted use on April 14, 2009. A public workshop was held on June 4, 2009, at Campbell Lodge in Durant Park to show the designs that have been completed by our consultants.  The project is expected to be advertised for bids in early 2010.
