The 3.5 acre Isabella Cannon Park was formerly known as Gardner Street Neighborhood Park. It was renamed to honor Raleigh's only female mayor, Isabella Cannon, who died at the age of 97 on February 13, 2002. She served as mayor from 1977 to 1979 and was an advocate for all citizens and her University Park neighborhood.
Funding to develop a master plan and renovate the park was included in the 2003 Parks and Recreation Bond Referendum. Existing features include a restroom, tot lot, picnic tables and grills, basketball court, open space, and small ball field.
The master plan, which was adopted on May 5, 2009, includes two playgrounds including one specifically for climbing, a pavilion, hard and soft surface paths, a rain garden, an outdoor classroom, the existing basketball court, picnic areas, and opportunities for interpretive signage and wildlife gardens.
Due to funding limitations the park will be developed in phases. Park elements included in Phase 1 are demolition of the existing concession/restroom building for expansion of the existing playground and picnic area, creation of a rock climbing play area, a pavilion/picnic shelter, drainage repairs, a new trail system through the park, and removal of the ball field lights and fencing.
